Pappu

This is a simple dal recipe.

Preparation and cooking time : 30 minutes

Ingredients

Toor dal : 1 cup
Dhaniya seeds : 1 table spoon
Tomato : 1, quartered
Green chillis : 4
Garlic : 3 flakes, roughly chopped
Tamarind : Small lemon sized
Turmeric : 1 pinch
Mustard seeds : ½ tablespoon
Cumin seeds : ¼ tablespoon
Dry red chillis : 3-4 (Optional)
Onion 1 small, finely chopped
Curry leaves : 1 twig
Coriander : To garnish
Salt : To taste
Oil : 2 tablespoons


1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan. Add chopped garlic, green chillis and saute till garlic turns brown. Add Dhaniya seeds and saute till a nice smell emanates. Add washed toor dal, turmeric and saute for 2 minutes.
2. Add chopped tomatoes, tamarind and required amount of water. Pressure cook until dal is softly cooked.
3. Mash the mixture. Add required amount of salt and keep aside.
4. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil I a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter. Add dry red chillis, curry leaves, cumin seeds, and onions. Saute till the onions are translucent. Pour the mashed dal into this and cook for 5 minutes on low flame. Garnish with coriander.


Note : You can add cumin seeds while sautéing dhaniya seeds. This further enhances the flavor of pappu.
